Nautical Mile | Math Lesson Plan

Support Materials
About
Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding and usefulness of an earlier measurement of the nautical mile prior to its size reduction and official adoption as the International Nautical Mile in 1953. With meter/foot conversions to help them stay informed, students will learn to use a method to obtain Earth’s radius and circumference. During this process, students will gain experience in finding the number of feet and the number of arc minutes in earth’s circumference and how these results will lead them to the nautical mile.

Standards
Common Core Math Standards
– Understanding rational vs. irrational numbers and their properties.
– Reason Quantitatively: To understand the nautical mile size reduction through unit conversion and comparison.
– Reason Quantitatively: Use units to guide the solutions to problems. Create equations that describe relationships. Through engagement, students can learn a method of finding the length of a nautical mile, i.e., determining the average minute of arc.
– Reason Quantitatively: Create equations that describe relationships / Write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems.
